Does the Cherry Mobile Thunder Eclipse the Flare

For over three months now, the Cherry Mobile Flare has been a darling to the local phone community. For Php3,999 you get 4-inch Android phone with a nice WVGA resolution (480 x 800) and a dual core Qualcomm processor.  The Flare brings mid-level specifications at a entry level price. Cherry Mobile has several other popular phones, but none of them is as popular as the Flare. This is evident when you visit a Cherry Mobile store. When the Flare is on stock, expect a long line to buy one. But yes, the Flare is worth lining up for. It has no direct competition. No other phone comes close to matching the Flares price and specifications, even after three months.

I think we are all familiar with how the Flare looks like. Here is the Thunder.
The good looks carry over to the side.

OMG! Who designed the camera housing? Trust me, it looks worse in person.

Cherry Mobile has come up with another seemingly unbeatable value for money proposition, and this one is aptly name the Thunder. This phone is priced Php4,999, a full 1K more than the Flare. You wont see any long lines for this one though, since you can only buy it online from Lazada.

The question is, is the Thunder worth Php1,000 more than the Flare.

Display. The most evident difference is the display size. The Flare has a 4-inch display, while the Thunder has a much larger 4.5-inch display. The bigger display does have its drawbacks. The 4-inch Flare has a WVGA (480 x 800) screen which has a pretty sharp 233 pixels per inch (ppi). The Thunder has a larger 4.5-inch FWVGA display (480 x 854) which is a bit less sharp at 218 ppi.

It is real estate versus pixel density. Both phones look reasonably sharp to me, so I will go with real estate.

Thunder value added: I think the bigger display alone is worth another Php1,000.

Flash: Both the Thunder and the Flare have 5 MP primary cameras and VGA front cameras, but the Thunder has no flash. This means no night shots, and no flashlight functionality.

Thunder value added: I think the absence of a flash and flashlight is worth at least Php500. So negative Php500.

Processor. The Flare come equipped with a dual core 1.2 GHz processor on a Qualcomm S4 Play chipset with Adreno 203 graphics. The Thunder comes with a slightly more powerful dual 1 GHz on a MediaTek chipset with PowerVR SGX531 graphics.

Thunder value added: I actually prefer the Qualcomm chipset, not so much for the power but because the Qualcomm chipsets on my phones seem to last forever. I dont have any long term experience with MediaTek chipsets. But faster is faster, so I would think the MediaTek chipset is worth Php500 more.

Battery. The Thunder comes with a larger 1800 mAh battery as against the Flares 1500 mAh unit. But the larger screen will also consumes the battery faster. It is pretty much a draw in terms of battery life.

Thunder value added: Php0.

Modern design. The Flare retains the older three button format of Android Gingerbread phones. The Thunder uses the newer Ice Cream Sandwich/Jelly Bean three button format. In some cases, it actually is better to have the four buttons, but apps are now designed around the three button format, and it does make the Thunder look more current.

Thunder value added: A newer look has to be worth something. Php250 value added to the Thunder.

The other specifications of these two phones are identical with 4 GB of internal storage expandable via a microSD card slot, 512 MB of RAM and WiFi and HSPA connectivity.

By my rather subjective valuation, the Thunder is worth the Php1,000 premium over the Flare. It is not a better value or money choice than the Flare. It really comes down to what size of phone you prefer, and how much you want the flash and the flashlight functionality.

Me, I like real estate. I would happily cough up Php1,000 more for the Thunder.

Apple The giant that isnt as original as you once thought

If you’re anything like me here then you’re more than likely fed up with Apple seemingly suing the rest of the planet when it comes to phone design and whatever else they can think of. Now, if you’re anything like our own Chris Yackulic then you really are pissed with Apple. I think Chris might just hate Apple more than he hates the lack of Flash in Chrome for Android, which you can hear all about here.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock then you must know that Apple have had out for Samsung, legal wise for a very long time, indeed they’ve been trying to pin Samsung for a great many number of patents for years now. The Cupertino outfit is out for Samsung because they feel that the design of the Galaxy S line of phones as well as the Galaxy Tab line matches too closely with the design of the iPhone and iPad.

The suit has been a long drawn out but is scheduled to kick off properly soon. Documents have now been presented to the court describing Apple looking to Sony for inspiration when designing the iPhone back in 2006 which could well complicate things and I’m willing to bet that Samsung are looking to influence the jury with these findings.

What Would Sony Do?

The above is a question that Apple’s designers were asked when starting out on the iPhone’s design. The late Jobs was always a fan of Sony in fact, when a Software Engineer at Cupertino had Mac OS X running on x86 processors he swiftly hopped on a plane to meet with the head of Sony. Perhaps for talks on getting Mac OS X onto the VAIO line of laptops but, nothing came of the talks, if it did, Apple could be a very different company today. The submission that Samsung made to the court include a number of CAD mock-ups along with e-mail exchanges from the time period as well. Some of the mock-ups mentioned in the documents include a Jog wheel – being a switch and a wheel – which featured first on Sony’s Clie line of personal assistants.

As well as images like the above the documents feature e-mails such as an exchange between the sainted Jony Ive and Richard Howarth concerning Shin Nishibori an Apple Designer who is referred to as “that sony-style chappy”. Exchanges then begin to include 3D images of mock-ups based on Nishibori’s design of which Howarth had this to say “He’s able to achieve a much smaller-looking product with a much nicer shape to have next to your ear and in your pocket”. It’s clear that the design team at Apple were looking to Sony for inspiration on the design and likely had their design team look throughout many Sony products.

Whilst this practice isn’t something new in the industry indeed, it’s common place. How can you make an original product without even knowing what’s out in the wild? The strange and ironic thing about this new info is that Apple are staunch in their description of Samsung’s devices being stolen design but, if the company looked to Sony and perhaps others, just where has the iPhone’s design DNA come from?

“Good Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal”

From the mouth of Steve Jobs often came the above, a favoured saying of his which he mis-quoted from Picasso. “Lesser artists borrow; great artists steal” is something that Jobs was more than happy to live by in fact, whilst Apple are the company to be praised with inventing and introducing us to the idea of a GUI as we know it, it was Xerox. Apple were invited to see the technology as a trade of stock due to the heads of Xerox seeing no value in the idea, Jobs and his engineers poured over the interface and the mouse itself and lo and behold, some time later the macintosh was born. Mac OS X itself is built upon BSD Unix that Apple had nothing to do with but due to licensing surrounding BSD they got away with that. If anyone is interested in seeing an early Jobs speak his favoured quote, here’s some fantastic YouTube fun for you:-

“I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”
The suit against Samsung and other forays to the ITC and whoever else in order to stop Android phones going on sale has nothing to do with Samsung’s design if you ask me. Of course, Apple’s lawyers thought it’d be an easy case to win, whether they were right is yet to be seen. What this has to do with is Android. The children down at Cupertino couldn’t stand it that Android was becoming successful and posing a threat to them, Jobs of course thought it stolen software which is both hard to proof and something that will never be proven if the US Patent System doesn’t see reform soon.

For a very long time now, what seems decades now, it’s been clear that Apple want to be the only company to sell you a phone, tablet or laptop. Cupertino aren’t interested in having a healthy ecosystem of competition and innovation within the tech industry, they want to be the only on. How can I say that? Well, aside from improving iteratively upon the iPhone and iPad hardware slowly and keeping iOS largely unchanged they’ve done nothing remotely revolutionary in close to six or so years. Apple are making massive profit after massive profit and have the lion’s share of the mobile market, why would they want to try and innovate to hold on to it? They want to be the only one in the game and the fact that Android has become a strong contender across numerous hardware types from big players in the mobile world scares the shit out of them. There’s no way I’ll have respect for a company that would rather spend time and money in court than delivering their customers with better phones and newer software, I don’t know about all of you but, I sure hope you’ll let you know!

HTC Opera UL Rumored To Be The Facebook Smartphone

Earlier this year there was some rumors saying that HTC is going to be building a facebook phone. This rumor was then put to rest by Mark Zuckerberg when he said that a facebook phone would not make any sense whatsoever. Earlier this week there was an unknown HTC phone popping up at benchmarks. The device was named HTC Opera UL. Pocket-lints sources in taiwan said that this device could be the facebook phone powered by android. This device is expected to feature a 1.4GHz quad core processor which is possibly the Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064, android 4.1 Jellybean as the accompanying software and a 1280 X 720 HD screen. If the image leak above is to be true then the Facebook phone will look pretty sweet. But still i dont quite get the point of a facebook powered android phone, if it was a facebook phone powered by windows phone 8 then i would believe because facebook is deeply integrated into WP8. Or maybe Facebook is trying to integrate facebook into the whole android OS with the facebook phone ?

HTC One Drop Test Premium Phone With Solid Construction

The HTC One has been out for quite sometime now and reviews of the device is now all around the web. So   its finally time for a drop test. The folks over at Android Authority pitted the HTC One against the iPhone 5 in a drop test. They chose the iPhone 5 due to obvious reasons of the device having the same construction and use aluminum for their chassis. Overall the similarities are that the both device will dent when they hit on their sides. Watch the video to see more, the HTC One faired pretty well in this test.

Samsung Odyssey For Verizon Wireless Renders Leaked

Currently the only Windows Phone 8 device by Samsung is the Ativ S and we are not expecting to see any more WP8 device by Samsung this year. But there is still one more mystery WP8 device called the Samsung Odyssey which Steve Ballmer mentioned in the WP8 launch. According to his words this device is coming in December and will be exclusive to Verizon wireless. Now we have a leaked render of this mystery device and the design of it reminds me of the Samsung Focus WP7 phone. The device is said to sport the same specs of the Ativ S but will have a different physical look.

Oracle and Google head to trial over Android

After months of tentative talks and rejected offers, Oracle and Google are finally heading to court in a lawsuit that puts the fate of the Android operating system in the balance.

In a memo penned on the 2ed of April,(which I’ve embedded below), Magistrate Judge Paul S. Grewal wrote that Google and Oracle had reached an irreconcilable impasse in their talks and, “In the end, some cases just need to be tried,” wishing both companies luck as their trial begins in San Francisco on Monday, April 16.

Oracle first filed suit against Google in 2010 claiming the search company had infringed on Java-related intellectual property.

Java is the programming language that forms the backbone of Android, Google’s blockbuster success of a mobile operating system. The Java IP in question, including a slate of specific copyrights and patents, had only recently been transferred to Oracle when that company finalized its acquisition of Sun Microsystems in early 2010.

Last summer, Google indicated it may have been willing to settle out of court in the matter. However, after some delays and a judge-ordered stay in the proceedings, the talks have apparently ended with no satisfactory resolution in sight. Ergo, a trial.

An Oracle victory in court could add up to billions in damages, and given that Google’s revenue per device is quite low — perhaps adding up to less than $550 million since Android’s debut in 2008 — any per-device licensing fee would put a damning dent in Google’s Android revenue.

Googlers have previously and repeatedly reassure VentureBeat that Android is not going anywhere anytime soon. “From a consumer standpoint, consumers should not be concerned about losing their Android phone,” a Google spokesperson said in a recent phone chat. “There’s no indication that Android is under threat… We’re actively pushing back on Oracle to preserve choice in the marketplace in the long term.”

Still, as Oracle — an unquestioned heavyweight in the patents department — and Google head to court, it’s hard not to cringe a bit when we think about how Android could get mangled in the process.

Im trying to reach out to Google for an update on the lawsuit and will keep you posted as this story develops.

Mozilla Fire Fox 4 For Mobile

After the release of Firefox 4 for desktop browsers, Mozilla also launched the final version of Firefox 4 which is devoted to mobile devices, particularly the Android operating system. Previously, a beta version for mobile browser is called Fennec.

Mozilla Firefox 4 also claims three times faster than the default browser on Android. But some users complain about the performance of this fire fox browser on their smartphone.

"They say so much faster than existing browsers, but it takes twice as long to open"wrote a user who has downloaded it in the Android Market.

This browser not support flash, but rely on HTML5, CSS and other web standards for rendering video content and animation. This may be quite disappointing some users.

Quoted from Computerworld on Wednesday (03/30/2011), Firefox 4 for Android offers a multi-tab interface, use the feature Awesome Bar found on the desktop version. Firefox 4 is available free on Android Market with a size of about 14MB. In addition to Android, there are also versions for OS Maemo on the Mozilla site.

Android OS that can download is version 2.0 and above. But apparently not all Android handsets can operate Firefox 4. Some users have reported Droid Motorola Firefox 4 does not work in the handset.

Apple does not need an iPhone mini it needs magic

How much are we will to pay for devices? I remember when I bought laptop. The cheapest laptop you could find would set you back about Php90,000. That was the price of portability over a decade ago. Back than, we were talking north of five pounds and two hours of battery life.

But prices started to drop. Three years ago, I would have been willing to spend Php70,000 to get something with a longer battery life and less weight. Today I could spend less than Php30,000 and meet approximate what would have cost me more than twice that much just a short three years ago. That is one steep drop.

While Intel cranks out faster chips for more powerful hardware, they have gotten to the point that they far exceed most peoples requirements. Thin and light is no longer such a premium item too. So from 90K, to 70K and a quick drop down to 30K. I think I am not the only person who feels that a laptop is something that we would not to spend to much on.

On other devices, the trend is the same. Just a few weeks ago, I got a SLT (a new twist on the DSLR), for twenty percent less than what a ProSumer camera cost me six years ago. A massive upgrade in specifications, for less money.

With smartphones, the trend has been different. I was pretty happy with whatever phone my carrier gave me. If I did not like the phones available, I would gave my handset to my wife, and got myself something I did like. If it had a physical QWERTY keyboard, it was good enough. Still, I never spent more than Php14,000 on a smartphone. With the advent of the iPhone and Android, things changed. In early 2011, I gave my carrier issued device to my wife, and got myself a new shiny Android phone for Php26,000. In a few months when my carrier issues me a new device, if it is not the one I like I can still see myself picking up something in about the same price range, though a lot of the options at less than 20K look interesting, and really, the phones priced at less than Php10,000 fit my needs. Smartphones are still the new cool "status symbol" thing to have, hence I think many of us are willing to spend more than we have to,

So what does all this have to do with Apple? Basically, when it comes to electronics, the trend seems to be, things get cheaper over time. Lower end models become more and more acceptable, so that we do need to spend more. But as prices go down, a larger market it reached, and what you cannot make up in term of large profit margins, you can try to approximate by selling in volume.

Bucking this trend is Apple. Still Apple is conceding little by little. MacBooks and iPods are cheaper than ever.

Apple revenues, almost 70% come from iOS. The iPhone and the iPad.The iPhone really wont survive without carrier subsidies. The iPad which looked like a bargain when it came out in 2010, is looking more and more expensive with each passing year.

This year, 2013 is a year I feel relevant innovation will stop on the mobile. More and more power will start to become superfluous, and is there really a need to go beyond 1080 x 1920 pixels on a smartphone and 2560 x 1600 on a tablet.  The smartphone and tablet will go the way of the laptop and the digital camera. And in every analyst mind, is how does Apple deal with this with its iPhone and iPad lines. The answer, the "mini". A "mini" would be a stop gap at best. Reviewers comment at how expensive the iPad mini is.

Apple really does not need a iPhone mini. It wont win a race to the bottom. What Apple needs is something new and innovative. The iPod was released in 2001, the iPhone in 2007 and the iPad in 2010. March marks the third year since the iPad release. Apple needs something new and innovative, in the next two or three years, and I am not talking about a better iPhone or iPad. It needs something "magical" if it is to continue its incredible run.

The 2013 Droid Wars have begun

Even before 2012 ends the next generation of Androids are already hitting the shelves. With Samsung having dominated the Android world since Q4 2011 and Samsung Galaxy S III wiping out its competitors, other Android manufacturers only have one choice. Push the envelope, and push there faster. HTC One X, the companies 2012 flagship has already been replaced by another HTC flagship phone in Japan and the US. The HTC Bufferfly J designed for the Japan market, with a revised model being released as the Droid DNA in the US,  has set the standard for what the next generation Android flagship will be like. HTC has already announced the international version of the HTC Butterfly J/Droid DNA, the HTC Butterfly.

HTC Butterfly

The HTC Butterfly sets that bar with the following features:
  • 5-inch 1080p (1080 x 1920 display, 441 ppi)
  • Second generation quadcore chipset
  • Faster graphics
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • Return of expandable storage
  • LTE
Little know Oppo, has released it own Oppo Find 5, which actually, has higher specifications that the HTC Butterfly (13 MP camera v. 8 MP camera; 2500 mAh battery v. 2020 mAh battery).

Oppo Find 5

Than we have the Sony Xperia Yuga which is rumored to be coming with a 5-inch display, a Samsung Exynos 5 chipset (quad core ARM Cortex A-15) and monster 16 MP camera and a 3000 mAh battery,

Sony Xperia Yuga?

Myth 1 - The phones will be too large

The HTC Butterfly is actually 0.1 mm narrower than the Samsung Galaxy S III, and weighs just 7 grams more. The new large screens wont make the less handy than todays 4.7 to 4.8-inch Android monster phones.

Myth 2 - Battery life will be horrible

The battery life tests on the Droid DNA indicate that the next generation 1080p Droids wont be as power hungry as one may think.

Talk time
